Went to Changi Beach for late lunch and some sunset photos shooting, walking around for some street shots walkabout, the sunset was very nice and the weather is clear and free of pollution....Wish the sunset remains timestill forever, the sight is breath taking, lets the photos do the talking....

After the late lunch, took some stroll along the Changi Beach where the bumboats are setting off to the islands northeast of Singapore.

Hong Kong Trip in 20 OCT 2008 Day 3

Day 3, going to Ocean Park and some shopping, not much photos are taken in, so here u are, almost a day in Ocean Park with nice scenery.

Day 2 start out for some famous HK dim sum, on the quest to the recommended restaurant. Here are some authenticate HK dim sum...., will be going to the water-front, the Jardine Market area and the PEAK....hope will have enough time to cover....here are the photos of Day 2 event.

Its a long time I havent update my blog, sorry guys. Been busy lately for work and school....Programming was really a nightmare for me, been agonize by it.....well everything is over, exams are over too...woohooo, no more programming. So I reward my self a trip to Hong Kong, here are some of the photos I took there....

Sony Alpha 900 is OUT!!!

In the cut-throat digital camera market it's increasingly unusual for products to be shown in prototype form or announced more than a matter of weeks before they hit the stores. There's several reasons for the manufacturers' habit of playing their cards so close to their chests, not least that they can't afford to harm sales of the models they've already released. Sony, the newest 'new kid' on the DLSR block, has no such worries, this being its first proper 'high end' DSLR. In fact, if anything the pressure was on the company to show it was committed to becoming a major SLR system player and that it wasn't going to squander Minolta's long legacy in this market after picking up the assets Konica Minolta shed when it pulled out of the photography market. Thus we saw the first prototype of the Alpha 900 - Sony's flagship full frame digital SLR - back in early 2007 (it appeared behind glass at trade shows such as PMA in March 07), and information has been trickling out ever since; most significantly with the announcement in January of this year of a 35mm full frame CMOS sensor.

And so when Sony finally showed the finished Alpha 900 to us a month or so ago there were few surprises at the basic specification or the appearance of the camera. As we started to dig a little deeper, pore over the fine print and actually use the Alpha 900 we were, however, increasingly surprised - and almost always pleasantly so - at some of the decisions made by Sony's engineers when designing its flagship SLR.

The success of the Alpha 900 amongst the Minolta, Konica Minolta and Sony faithful seems assured; at a launch price of just shy of USD$3000 it offers a lot of 'bang for your buck' and there is undoubtedly a significant number of Minolta film SLR users who've been waiting years for a full frame digital body on which to use their existing lenses. The challenge for Sony, however, is to generate some interest from people without an existing investment in the Minolta (or subsequent Alpha) system. And on paper the Alpha 900 looks promising - and we're already impressed with the build, handling and viewfinder; we'll find out more about how well it actually performs when we finish our full review. For now enjoy this in-depth preview of the latest addition to the small but growing, exclusive full frame DSLR club.

New lenses
The A900 is launched with two new full frame lenses, the 70-400mm F4-5.6 G SSM and this very nice Zeiss Vario-Sonnar T* 16-35mm F2.8 ZA SSM. Incidentally you can use Sony/ Minolta crop lenses (DT) on the Alpha 900 by switching on the 'crop mode' option.

Yes!!!, the Heaven did not disappoint me, IT DID NOT RAIN....wahahahaha. Was a hot and humid afternoon, we were there from 5:15pm to chop place, reached there, was packed....We try to squeeze in 5 tripods, with the shorter ones in front, the taller ones behind...taking care not to block the views....and yes finally, Wired remote control checked, Tripod checked, zoom @ 20mm checked,aperture setting @ f/18 checked, shutter setting @ BULB checked, manual focus @ infinity checked, position aiming at the ship checked, test shot checked.....Its Started @ 7:44pm and last shot fired is 8:11pm

This lens is a bit under-appreciated. It is rather sharp even wide open, although at 105mm you need to stop down a little bit, like F8 - F10. The colors are fantastic. It has better colors and it is sharper than the kit lens Sony DT 18-70mm. The lens itself seems to be of solid build, the zoom motor can be noisy and sometimes when zooming very slowly there are grinding noises! Overall the powerzoom isnt that bad.

Everything is ready, 7:15pm, Wired remote control checked, Tripod checked, zoom @ 19mm checked, manual focus @ infinity checked, position aiming at the ship checked, test shot checked.....suddenly heard a thundering sound and flashes of lights across the sky, wind is picking up speed....My colleagues said "OH NO, Its going to rain soon...." "Nooooooo......... I exclaimed....just when I finish the word, the wind became violent, blowing as hard as it could, my tripod is on the verge of falling...little rain drops came running down...."PACK UP!!!...." My colleagues roar....but I manage to took a shot of a single Firework (is it a test shot by them too?) Well, I will never give up, will try it again soon............

Now in my dry box has another newly acquired lens, although is 2nd hand but it is in mint condition. Minolta 50mm F1.7 RS Prime lens, aka the poor man lens....Last time before Minolta been taken buy over by Sony, this lens used to cost around S$170, now on the 2nd hand market in Singapore, this lens now cost between $250 - $280, its another brother the Minolta 50mm F1.4, cost between $300 - $380.....

hehehe....dun ask me about the technical stuff, I also quite new in this area, for the explanation, wat I koe about the 2nd graph is the viewing different between full frame cam vs the APS-C cam. The Sample photos are posted in here and here.

Edit: Found out the graph on the 1st picture means, it about the sharpness comparison at which aperture setting...in this case, the Minolta 50mm f/1.7 is the sharpest @ f/8

National Geographic Bag

Had been shopping for a new camera ever since I bought the Sony DSLR A350, need to be cheap and nice and most important can put in at least 3-4 lenses and my Asus eeepc 701 notebook, seen a lot of bags, none seems to attract me. Then came across National Geographic Channel on StarHub cable about photography, saw a very nice NGO bag those photographer carrying, wah, chio leh, dun koe will +5 to my photography skill or not....hahaha

So, just went around shopping for that bag, found it selling in Cathay Photo, ask the price, not bad $130, it also has a name, Earth Explorer Shoulder Bag - Medium, nice bag leh...

Huawei E169 USB Modem on Asus eeepc

I'm now officially on mobile Broadband wagon on the go...woohoo, now the cheapest with free modem is Singnet. I had read from Asus eeepc forum and found out the Huawei E220 work out of the box but not E169 the thumb drive shape modem for default Xandros Linux...jialet liao

Search through Google only found 1 blog (http://dalelane.co.uk/blog/?p=254) and read up on how to recompile the driver for default xandros, its a bitch to compile it, spent my whole Sunday just to understand and make it work...yes, I'm a noob on Linux and the ang mo english really need to read and reread many many times, well fear not, I had redone it in Asian Singapore English style, hope fellow Singaporeans can understand it...

Before you start, you need to download 2 files, USB ModeSwitch and replace the usb_modeswitch file found inside the zip with this one from here (I also got read up Asus eeepc Forum). Because if you dun replace the file, you will keep getting "Floating point exception" sibei frustrating....however i did choose to delete all lines from the config file that didnt directly relate to the Huawei E169.

ok, now is the step by step with some dcreenshot to help those really noob people like me. First type "su" to make yourself "SuperUser" aka Administrator.

***UPDATES***

You dun need to redo the create new connection thingy, but you need to to type these 2 command everytime u shutdown ur eeepc. U can use the E169 on other laptop, be it windows or another Linux OS.

Please type them in SU mode
./usb_modeswitch -v -0x12d1 -p 0x1001 -d 1
./usb_modeswitch -v -0x12d1 -p 0x1001 -H 1

I will try to create a exec file when i'm free, just like windows double click only.

copy the usb_modeswitch.conf to /etc directory. Before you do that, you delete all those not relate to the Huawei E169, you will know, dun worry.

Next copy the usb_modeswitch to /sbin, before you do that, right click the file, go properties, tick all 9 boxes.

Then plug in the Huawei E169 modem and wait for it to blink blue led. Then type " ./usb_modeswitch -v 0x12d1 -p 0x1001 -d 1 ".

Type, " ./usb_modeswitch -v 0x12d1 -p 0x1001 -H 1 "

Go make a new connection, choose the GSM/3G/UTMS/HSDPA

Choose the first one. (I choose the first one and it works, so didnt bother the 2nd one)

Click Search.

Wait for a few seconds...

Choose the SingTel one, if other teleco, then choose other teleco lah...

Of cos, choose Singapore - SingTel, the below 3 setting dun bother, leave it as default.

Choose a name if you like.

And click Finish.

Choose the Mobile Data Connection to enable.

Wait for it to startup...

Woo hoo....Surfing on the go.....

Fundamental Digital SLR Handling Course (SDW course)

Today just attended the Sony Digital Workshop, "Fundamental Digital SLR Handling Course". Had a good understanding and knowledge of my Sony Alpha DSLR, taught by Julian W, Sony's Photographer...All right, I will give some inside detail of what I had learn from the course.

Shutter Mode

Shutter Speed set to higher, picture become darker, so need to adjust ISO to a higher setting to make it brighter.
Press AEL to zoom in to view the sharpness of the picture after taken.

Threshold of the shutter speed

Majority of the people had a threshold of handling shutter speed at 1/30 without the use of the SSS(Super Steady Shot). Sony SSS can only support up to 2 drop of the shutter speed, the rest is up to your fundamental of breathing before firing your shot.(Remind me of my M-16S1 Weapon fundamental handling during BMT...hehehe)

So to know your true threshold of your own steadiness, try this, switch your shutter speed to 1/30, turn off SSS, take 10 same shots, press AEL to zoom in to check your sharpness, drop 1 drop of the shutter speed and repeat till all your 8-10 shots are blur, that is your true threshold.

D-Range Optimizer

When film is brought to a developer for processing, technicians adjust the photo lab printer to control the overall image density – balancing the exposure between highlight and shadow areas – to produce perfect images.

Now you can be your own technician to bring out the exposure between highlight and shadow areas!! Hows that for my Sony DSLR, but when taking bright object/subject, off the D-Range Optimizer or the picture when taken will be blown out the bright colors making it over contrast. Example, Red, Yellow....those bright colors

Golden Tips:

Always on your D-Range Optimizer and set it to Plus (+).

Aperture Mode

Aperture are very important in the essence of the photo you taken.

Golden Tip:

Finally, after serious consideration between Tamron or Sigma 70-300mm zoom lens, I had settle on the Sony DT55-200mm f4-5.6 telephoto zoom lens, what make me settle for this lens, well , see some reviews from other website, the 70-300mm lens had some "SSS", "IS", "VR" or "OS"(Anti-Shake) problem at 300mm range and really needs a tripod but 200mm still can handheld. Of course the most important thing is that Sony had this ED (Extra-low Dispersion) Glass installed, which Tamron or Sigma dun have....Woo Hoo, you can call me Mr Zoom Man. Took some picture with this new zoom lens around my neighbourhood.

You can check the spec at the Sony website, Its a cheap and good lens at its range, pictures are sharp, like the bokeh effect too but the AF is a bit slow and the lens are quite heavy, tats my reviews on this lens.

As per my colleuge recommendation of the MUST HAVE equipment for starters hobby photographer like me, not very much of them...just a few essential items.

1. Filters
There are a lot kinds of filters out in the markets, example: Skylight 1B, UV, Polarising....but which one is for me?? Well as starters, you really need is the UV and Polarising Lens.
The UV filter are to protect your expensive lens, imagine there is a freak accident, a pen came poking in, the most is your cheap cheap UV lens break only, saving your really above few hundreds or thousands dollars worth of lens.
The Polarising filter allow you to remove unwanted reflections from non-metallic surfaces such as water, glass etc. They also enable colors to become more saturated and appear clearer, with better contrast. This effect is often used to increase the contrast and saturation in blue skies and white clouds.

2. Cleaning Brush and Blower
Lenspen is the brand, 1 brush to have multi function cleaning tool. Perfect for cleaning binocular lenses, small aperture spotting scopes and telescopes, eyepieces, and other optical items. Comes with a handy retractable dust removal brush and a special non-liquid cleaning element, designed to never dry out. Safe and very easy to use.
Blower is the Giotto Rocket Blower, powerful air blow out after a tight squeeze, cheap cheap too...

3. Dry box/Dry Cabinet
It is a MUST HAVE item, any one also can, be it dry box(really on budget) or the best is the dry cabinet...Dont risk having fungus to appear on ur expensive lenses, filters or DSLR.....
Digi Cabi dry cabinet model DB-036 is a good and cheap cabinet, hold about 30L.

Filters are cheap, get those around S$20 types, cos you wont feel so heart pain if really break due to accident, you know the filters are there to protect your lenses...

Lenspen and the Giotto Rocket Blower are around S$10 each.

The most expensive are the dry cabinet in this MUST HAVE essential items. The Digi Cabi model DB-036 dry cabinet is around $105, the cheap version will be the dry box, all cost less than S$100.

so there you are, you are ready to go for more snapping without worry about your equipment getting dirty/dusty, fungus or accident towards the lenses area....

All about UV Filters

On a digital SLR camera, the primary purpose of the UV Filter is lens protection for expensive lenses (such as the Carl Zeiss Lens ). I regard the B+W MRC UV filter as the best UV filter available but also the most expensive ones, so I choose a little lesser cost but effective UV filter... HOYA Super HMC UV Filter

There is an ongoing debate over the use of UV filters for lens protection. Neither side is wrong - they simply have differing opinions - and the freedom of choice.

The non-UV filter users say that their lens hoods provide all of the protection they need. They say UV filters degrade their pictures. Their contingency is that they can have a damaged lens repaired under their warranty coverage.

I am a member of the UV filter users. A high quality UV filter such as the HOYA Pro 1 Digital UV Filter will not degrade the final picture in most instances. A very bright light in the background of your picture *may* cause the filter to generate a small amount of flare, but I rarely detect any other filter-caused image defects. If I scratch the filter, I can simply remove it and keep shooting. I feel much more comfortable cleaning dirt off of an $28 filter than I do from a very expensive lens. I feel a little less protective of my lenses when they are protected with UV filters as well. Note: A UV filter is not going to save the lens from a significant impact. You will still want warranty coverage if the lens is valuable.

Even non-regular filter users will want a filter when shooting in very dusty or harsh conditions (think salt water spray). Some lenses require UV filters to complete their weather sealing.

UV filters are supposed to block UV light. So, for the newcomers to photography let's first look at what UV light is and why you would want to block it.

The "traditional" visible spectrum runs from red to violet. Red light has the longest wavelength and violet the shortest. Light which has a longer wavelength than red is called infrared, and light which has a shorter wavelength than violet is called ultra violet or UV. The wavelength of light is measure in units of nanometers (abbreviated as nm), and 1nm is a billionth of a meter (that's a US billion or 1000 million, not a UK billion which is a million million!). Light shorter in wavelength than about 400nm is called ultra violet, light longer in wavelength than 700nm is called infrared.

So now we know what UV light is, why would be want to block it? Well the answer lies in the way that color film works. There are basically three color sensitive layers, one sensitive to red light, one to green light and one to blue light. The blue layer not only responds to blue light, but also to UV light, so if there is a lot of UV around the blue sensitive layer gets extra exposure and the final image takes on a blue color. Since film isn't normally sensitive to infrared, you don't need an infrared blocking filter. Interestingly though, digital sensors are infrared sensitive and most digital cameras have an infrared blocking filter built in.

Now there isn't usually a huge amount of UV around at sea level. There is some (that's what gives you a suntan or a sunburn) but most of it is scattered by the atmosphere. However as you gain altitude, for example by going up a mountain, the amount of UV increases. Under these conditions a UV filter can prevent a blue cast in photographs.

Since UV filters look clear and neutral to the naked eye, some people also use them as a protective filter which they leave on their lens at all times. Some people think this is a good idea, other question the wisdom placing a $20 filter in front of a $1000 lens and potentially affecting image quality. Both schools of thought have some valid points. It's your choice.

B+W and Heliopan make excellent filters. Although many brands of UV filters exist, the quality and performance of B+W MRC and Heliopan SH-PMC filters place them among the world's finest. Black anodized brass rings reduce binding or cross threading and to ensure optimal alignment. The MRC and SH-PMC multicoating prevents light from being reflected off the surface of the filter - you want the light to go into the lens. High end Hoya filters are also good, but can be a pain to clean (they tend to smear).

Which to choose.....

So sianzz, dun koe which brand of lenses to choose for my Telephoto Zoom Lenses range because I got 3 brands of lenses on my mind, namely Sony, Tamron and Sigma, in fact I had already shortlisted to 2 brands and they are.....*drum rolls pls*

Tamron AF 70-300mm F/4-5.6 Di LD Macro

Sigma 70-300mm F4-5.6 APO DG MACRO

Why these 2 lenses as you all wonder??...well first thing first, they are cheaper by 20-30% over Sony(which is also my main reason for sourcing them), Specifications, Sharpest, Macro ability @ 180mm-300mm for Tamron, 200mm-300mm for Sigma. Sony had none and it cost RRP:S$399!!! Although these 2 lenses are a bit hard to find in the second hand market because of Sony mount, I still can order from US website and its still very cheap. You can check it out the specifications for these 2 lenses there Tamron and here Sigma.

Had search intensively over the google for reviews, sadly can't find anyone that really compare them side by side....Only had individual reviews on them. For spec wise, the Sigma lenses are good but for QC wise Tamron are the ones.. ClubSNAP forum had supporters from the 2 camps and not really helpful on the reviews of the 2 lenses. I even found out from the ClubSNAP forum that one of the member had broke the gears for the AF in the Sigma lenses because the AF motor of the Sony Alpha DSLR-A700 is too powerful....oh oh, first time I heard that, or am I relatively new to the DSLR area so never heard before...hahaha

Well my phase Test for the Cisco is this Thursday, wah lau havent go practice yet...jialet, my Router OSPF command still not sure yet....need to really go practice liao...

My Bangkok Trip on 19 April 2008 Day 4 & 5

Woke up feeling very cold, look out of the windows, oh its raining heavily, so took out my camera, snapping away the blur, watery morning.

So bo piang, have to wait for the rain to stop, but it keep on raining till afternoon. So sian, watching their thai TV program the whole morning.

Walk to the Central World which is just behind my hotel, the first sight I saw, a very familiar sight, think i saw the same somewhere in Singapore.

The Weather is so hot in Bangkok, after snapping for 15 mins, I was in sweats, quickly chiong in to air-conditional shopping centre, something attract me, hmm...look very similar, saw the same LOVE in one of the shopping centre in Singapore.

Then found something excite me...zoom all the way in and saw....ICE-CREAM again...hahahaha

Day 2, wake up too early, MBK havent open shop yet, so go nearby walk walk, found something similar to Singapore

Its StarBuck cafe...woo, went in, sit down,buy a cup of coffee and sip slowly as i watch those working class rushing to work...this is life...relaxing

After coffee, slowly walk back to MBK shopping center...

Finally, the MBK shopping center

Went in, saw Dokin Donuts...oh cannot resist, so went in, sit down and order
DONUTS ALOH....

Going, going, goin....gone

Next stop, saw SWENSENS....yes ice-cream time
Drooling Time....

After shopping and walking, endless walking....feets really hurt
Finally is Dinner Time...Lets have Japanese Food

Make a guess the whole table of Japanese food cost how much in Singapore Dollars??
Its only S$25....Where to find...HOOT AR

My Bangkok Trip on 19 April 2008 Day1

After a year without holidays and finished my 20 days In-Camp-Training, finally going for a short trip to Bangkok, Thailand...Lands of Smiles

Staying @ Grand Diamond Suite, after reading the catalog display of the various room size and rate on the Front Desk Reception of the hotel, can u believe it is the same size as our Singapore new 4 room HDB flat sold to us....92sq feet!!!

Feeling abit hungry, went down to A&W...woo, havent seen them in Singapore anymore liao..

Next stop, pratunam market opp pantip plaza, its women little haven, we spent all the afternoon shopping walking around there...my feets are acing, how come they(women) can tahan endless walking to and fro without feeling tired...

After the whole afternoon shopping and walking, it is already evening time, how times flies, off we go to Suan Lum Night Market, found a restaurant call Safari. They really serve good found of the locals...TOMYAM and GREEN CURRY...WOO HOO

The Aftermath of the local food, woohoo, no word to describe......really unsurpassed great taste.

My First Virgin Post

Finally after so many of my friends had blog, even the Lao Zhe Bor also have blog, how can I, working as an IT Administrator in a corporate company dun have a blog....

My first blood post, lately had bought many many gadgets, overspent my this month pay, waiting for my next pay day which is next month 15th....kaozz
Think will be eating bread for the rest of this month le....so ke lian, but the gadget that i had bought really brighten up my life.

Need to find a new hobby liao, been sleeping, watching Starhub Cable TV for the past 1 year during my weekends, getting fatter liao...if my wife is not working, ok lah can go shopping, walk walk see see and drink coffee with her.

Yes, think my next hobby will be in to Photography...chill chill

Yes yes...Its the ORANGE BOX, Its SONY ALPHA DSLR A350, been bargaining with the Best Denki Saleman, the bundle come with the A350 Body, SAL1870 DT 18 - 70mm F3.5 - 5.6 Lens, Tripod, Sony Bag, Kingston 4GB CF card(which later i change it to Sandisk 4GB Ultra II), 2GB Sony Memory Stick Pro Duo, Sony Memory Stick Pro Duo to Compact Flash Adaptor.

It is small, it is light, it is compact...Its its ASUS EEEPC...woo hoo, using the default Xandros Linux, 2 GB ram, it really fast...it is my little blogging machine.

Dun see this speaker no up wor....Its really powerful wor...the sound is sound really tok kong tok kong wor...dun believe ar, see the next picture...
