My walkaround lens is the classic Minolta AF 28 - 105mm f/3.5-4.5 xi power/auto zoom lens, er...what is power/auto zoom lens? Hee hee, its means can the lens came with a built-in motor for you to zoom in and out faster, no need to turn ur barrel to zoom in and out...cool leh

This lens is a bit under-appreciated. It is rather sharp even wide open, although at 105mm you need to stop down a little bit, like F8 - F10. The colors are fantastic. It has better colors and it is sharper than the kit lens Sony DT 18-70mm. The lens itself seems to be of solid build, the zoom motor can be noisy and sometimes when zooming very slowly there are grinding noises! Overall the powerzoom isnt that bad.

In your case, Its not called a walkaround lens....Walkaround lens means, u carry one (1) lens, fixed on the DSLR body and walkaround with it, taking photos/shots.

OK, yes put on and snap. What is the little button for on the side of the lens next to the autozoom and manual zoom? I love this lens also, I find with this lens and a good 2x teleconverter, I could usually go all day. But will never give up my Minolta 28-135 1:4 (22) 4.5 lens (this is the older hand made lens that Minolta lost a fortune one...too expensive to build..I just love the colors and sharpness of it).

For wat I know is that the "little button" can only works on older bodies, like Minolta Dynax 7xi, it seems the function for the "little button" is for distance scale and only the 7xi or D7 can see the display on the LCD, ours Sony bodies cannot see it....

I like the lens etc., but well, it sits there, and I've tried everything with it.
Just picked up a 70-200 xi lens, so will play with that this weekend to see how it compares.
The button works with all Minolta-xi Bodys. It keeps the object in a constant size also it moves by using the motor-zoom.

Since I got my a700 it was the 18-200mm 3.5, hands down. Obviously it was the most usable if only due to its Very Wide range. As for IQ, given decent or better llight, was very acceptable.
But 2 weeks ago came my 28-105mm xi, yeah same as yours, for $110 +S&H, Not a Finger Print on it!
Right off, shot at all ranges, my 3yo granddaughter. In mixed shade. Wow! What Zippy AF! And the power zoom, though probably not batt friendly, is fun, too. Noticed the button thing- hoped it was type of focus lock or focus limiter- trials told me nothing. Who care- righto? Actually miss the distance gauge- use it often to get my manual focusing off to right start. Why would they leave out?Useful only on xi's seems to me too limiting, lowers value as all round lens too. I do have two (2) 9xi's. That is True. A working pair. And a dozen "Smart Cards". Relics now.
Back to 28-105. Really miss the wide range of Sony Zoom, but this one's all round IQ beats the Sony. And faster AF to boot. Read your vignetting charts, but can not relate to them. Your figures (the little graphs) seem overly exxagerrated to me. I've seen nothing in my pix to verify this.
1 Thing to ask. If you have Sony 18-200mm, really a very nice, all round lens, have you noticed a tendency for AF to slow or stop when batt has reached 50% or less? Goes right back to 100% usefulness with fresh batt or when I swap places in my vertical grip/battery holder. And I mean the AF STOPS! Anywhere from 55% to about 35% it will cease focusing. No such trouble with this 28-105mm so far.
For an all-round, "walkin'round" lens, it's my favorite so far. But know I lack a wide angle and a true tele-zoom.
Will carry either 18-200 or 70-210 (yeah, beer can) for a fill in the gaps piece. Or 11-18mm with the beer can.
